Nice Gnashers Not Needed
By Anne Pawsey
Having straight teeth may give you a pretty smile but they won’t improve your self esteem.
Despite pressure from our American cousins we Brits have always been pride of our wonky teeth, and it turns out we were right, having straight teeth doesn’t make you happy. A study of three hundred children over twenty years found that, whilst none of the people in the study regretted the treatment, once they were adults the treatment had no effect on their self esteem.
Countless children across the world wear braces during adolescence and endure train-track-tastic teasing. The treatment is often expensive running to thousands of pounds, which seems a lot to spend on American-style teeth.

The results of the study surprised the researchers, who were expecting a positive effect on self esteem; it would seem that there are more important things than perfect teeth once you are an adult.
